Description: The Puritan Mine discharge (TR4) emanates from an abandoned underground coal mine, which was in operation from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. A passive treatment system was installed in 2012 which consisted of a single FeALMn type baffled limestone bed with 4 over and 5 under baffles within the limestone to prevent short circuiting through a $179,000 Growing Greener Grant. The system was only able to treat 100 gpm and experienced regular maintenance issues. A partnership effort was formed in 2014 to seek funding to redesign the treatment system. A new full-scale passive system was constructed in 2020. In addition, several small coal refuse piles were removed and/or reclaimed. The new passive system consists of an innovative approach to improve treatment efficiency including the use of solar-powered SmartDrain controllers to batch treat the AMD and consists of a Holding Pond, 2 Auto-Flushing Vertical Flow Ponds, and 2 settling ponds.
